Active rest is getting yourself out of your normal workout environment or routine and doing something more enjoyable to break training monotony. It’s common for any athlete to feel burned out and unmotivated to train. When this occurs, it’s important to mix things up and free the mind of your normal training routine. Randy has been known to substitute a day of training for a run in Red Rock National Park here in Vegas. Do you really think missing that one day of sparring or grappling hurt Randy? No, instead it helped him by giving him a break from the daily grind while still getting in a good workout. Getting outside and getting in a good run at a place like Red Rock gives you not only a good workout, but a mental break. I travelled home for the fourth of July this year along with my older brother, Josh. Home for me is Ironwood, Michigan. Josh and I never stepped foot in a gym to train. Instead, we chose to run a local ski hill called Mt. Zion. There is nothing fun about running Mt. Zion; it’s about ten minutes of hell to the top. It was different this time though. I have not seen a whole lot of green since moving to Vegas, so running Mt. Zion was very enjoyable. I hardly even thought about how hard the workout was because I was enjoying being outdoors in that environment. So, even though we took a break from our normal gym routines, we still got a great workout in. That’s active rest.

Today was the last hard day of training for Vitor Belfort and Mike Pyle. Both fighters are preparing for their July 19th fights on the Affliction “Banned” card. Both Vitor and Mike completed multiple high intensity conditioning/endurance rounds today with only thirty-second rest periods. Both fighters are in great shape and I look forward to watching them go to war on the 19th. Be sure to watch live on pay-per-view and check back for more pictures after the fight.

Congratulations to Tyson Griffin on his win at UFC 86 against a very tough opponent in Marcus Aurelio. Tyson dominated Aurelio for three rounds to earn the victory. It was great to see all of Tyson’s hard work pay off.

See the picture? Enough said. Tyson worked his butt off for this fight. Tyson got right back into the gym after his last fight in February and started (for the first time) pure strength training. We focused primarily on multi-joint movements (olympic lifting) and a ton of core training. For a 155lb’er, Tyson is stronger than many of the guys I train in higher weight classes. I couldn’t be happier with the speed and explosive strength that Tyson developed. Also, Tyson’s conditioning is second to none right now. Look for a faster, stronger, and more explosive Tyson Griffin at UFC 86 this Saturday night.
ALSO…Look for BODYBYBONACCI.TV on the back of Tyson’s shorts on fight night!!

Vitor Belfort takes on Terry Martin on July 19th on the Affliction “Banned” card. The fight is 18 days away (as of today) and Vitor is in great shape. I will be in California with Vitor for the fight, so check back for more photos. Also, that same night, Mike Pyle takes on J.J. Ambrose. This worked out perfectly for me as I was able to train both Vitor and Mike together during the same sessions. I also think it’s great for the guys to work together and push each other. One thing is for sure, both will be in great shape and ready to go on the 19th.

I’m focusing on a lot of strength & conditioning. I’ve been training with Jake Bonacci for my last 2 fights. I believe it took my game to the next level. I have gained improvement in my cardio and my muscle endurance. Mixed Martial Arts is a sport where you have to use all the muscles in your body and you have to have great cardio. Jake puts me through a lot of circuit training. Right now I’m about 10 weeks out from my next fight so I’m focusing on lifting heavier and getting stronger. When I get closer I’ll start lightening up the weight and focusing more on cardio.
